Keynote Presentation There has been a lot of talk over the last several months about climate change, carbon credits, and the potential opportunity for forestry-related projects. Many in the Forestry sector hope that the potential of being paid to not cut down trees can help them weather the severe downturn in the Forestry sector. Many woodlot owners hope that seeing forest for more than just fibre and lumber will provide new options for forest owners in how they manage their forests. To understand what opportunities are out there for woodlot owners
Please join us for a talk entitled: Seeing the Forest for the GHG's: Helping woodlot owners make sense
of fact and fiction in the carbon market. Yvan Champagne, VP, Eastern Canada, Blue Source Canada
and Stephen Mitchell Principle, Sustainable Forests Consulting.
We will answer questions such as:
- What is a carbon offset?
- What is forest carbon project?
- How does it work?
- What activities actually qualify?
- What opportunities exist for smaller woodlot owners?

Ryan Downer is a second year Carleton University student studying Environmental Science. Ryan volunteered at the Eastern Ontario Model Forest and authored a research paper outlining the International Model Forest Network, the Canadian Model Forest Network, the Eastern Ontario Model Forest and the Forest Certification Program. Ryan assisted Scott Davis the Forest Certification Coordinator with a post harvest assessment of a recently harvested woodlot in the Spencerville area. Click here to read Ryan's report.
Urbión Model Forest and the International Model Forest Network (IMFN) Secretariat are collaborating to "tell the Model Forest story"-publish the evidence of impacts Model Forests are registering globally through a series of articles written by experts in their fields. The new publication would help increase the visibility and awareness of Model Forests as unique and effective tools for sustainable development and natural resource management at a landscape scale in a manner that would share our impacts with the international community and better position the initiative to continue to make important contributions- individually and collectively - to key sustainability challenges. Scott Davis submitted this Abstract to the International Model Forest Network on behalf of the Eastern Ontario Model Forest: click here to download.
